Question 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Forbidden Future

How I have found Film opening compared to Prelim task:
My first prelim task was very hard to understand and was confusing with the genre not being clear to understand. This compared to our film opening was that it looked much more realistic and the summary of the genre was clear throughout the making.

In Locked Up we used a lot more props and our location had more detail and time put into it so we could show the viewer in the film of how the boys living conditions. The images below show the detail we put into the design of the shed to explain by showing pictures.
Throughout my prelim task our group was always thinking of new ideas to add too our plan to make it better which means we didn't follow our first, set idea where as in Locked Up we managed to come up with a good idea in our group and stuck to this idea. My  prelim task was hard to make it understandable because there was so many ideas in there. so I have learnt to come up with a basic idea first in my group, then add ideas and the key small details into it to make look good, over film footage slightly so you have backup to use when editing as it is better to have too much than not enough.

The software I used producing my film opening was much more varied and more complex than of what I used for my prelim task. For my Film opening I used many different software's which include: Premire, Slideshare, Emaze, Photobucket, Soundcloud. Using a varied amount of programs makes my blog and work look much more like a presentation. Using different software's and programmes which enabled me to improve my editing on both pieces of work so it is better for the audience to view as they will find it more interesting and it will improve the grade of my work
.
The locations that I decided to use for both tasks worked out to work and fit well with what I was trying to complete. The Forbidden Future was a dark alley way with flashing lights which we used to create supence in a Sci-Fi genre. For Locked Up we used a messy dark cabin which we added a lot more mess too to create more detail about his living conditions.
Something that went wrong in Locked Up was the sound because the voice overs were not clear to hear because of the music being played in the back ground but we managed too change this so it is much easier to hear.

When filming Locked Up the outdoor lighting changed to get dark very quick which caught us out so when we edited our film we had to put a lighting affect on so you couldn't see the change in light. In Forbidden Future we used our lighting very effectively to create the sense of eeriness in a dark corridor. Where as in our film opening we didn't want to use advanced lighting because it wasn't needed for our genre and what we was trying to achieve.
The interview that took place in Locked Up didn't work as well as we hoped it too. This was because we couldn't hear the victims voice very clearly so we added in subtitles. Also because he acting wasn't as engaged and focus as we needed it to be there was smiling, laughing at the time we had to be serious with emotion.
Also when filming locked up we foundthat filming the main section of the piece in one day early on in the time we had to produce our piece worked really well as we got it done quick so we could start editing earlier and have everything to be completed. If the filming wasn't up to scratch than we could go and re-shot in the time we left ourselves of what we had left. So I will remember this next time as it is a good option to do with making a project.
I can now learn from all of these things and remember them for next time to improve on my piece of work.

Blog Reflection

Technology- Have you learned new online programmes to show off work?

When producing my work I used different software to make it look visually interesting and well presented. One of the Programmes I used was Photobucket which I put all of the location shots and Images from filming which is put into  a slideshow so the viewer can look through in an order.
The PowerPoint's that i produced to show my piece of work had to be completed then download of SlideShare so it was a slide by slide visual presentation. The editing I do on work is done on Premiere which is a confusing and quite complicated piece of software to use until you get used to it once you discover the different tools you can use. The final piece you present on this programme helps you put it all into one video with all the editing and credits on there.

Mark out of 20?

I would give my blog a 11/12 out of 20. I would give it this mark as there are bits of work missing or out of place, I will need to complete them and put them in the correct labels so my blog will look visually presentable.

More thorough or less complacent?

Is it fun to look through?

Synopsis planning

Our film involves a kidnapping of a young boy and gets found by the neighbour of the house.

Location-
Our location was in Harrisons cabin which was in the back of his garden. We made this look dirty and unhygienic so it looked like he had been there for a while.
Another location we used was a small interview room which we used to do our interview with Josiah about his experience.
We also had an interview with the victims mother about how she was feeling.

Props-
we used a lot of rubbish such as tin cans and rubbish bags from cat food etc. so the cabin looked messy and not being cleaned out.
The messy clothing was another prop as we made the victim dirty and poor to show he has been kept for a long time.

Group members

James- James took the role of being Josiah who was the character that has been locked in the dark dirty cabin that has all the mess that has built up over time being in there. These conditions were very poor which you can see in the photo bucket on my Blog. James also done the title research of similar documentaries that we could get ideas from to help our film opening look presentable and good.

Sophie- Sophie wrote out the storyboard for our film so we produced a plan for our shot sequences & camera angles with the length of shot. Sophie also done a very good job of editing the film which included the titles, credits and transitions between the video clips.

Harrison- Was playing the role of the neighbour that finds Josiah (James) in the cabin and is the main character that is seen in our film. Harrison and James also produced two newspaper articles together and done voiceover to what was happening in the video clips.

Aaron- I was the Director of Photography and filmed all of our footage with being the director of the planning of what we was going to do and what camera angles to use. Also started to do parts of editing. I produced the risk assessment and shooting schedule as well so that the three other members in our group can use.

Production Diary

Day 1 (13th November)- Sophie, Aaron, James and Harrison all discussed and shared our individual pitches to each other and all decided on the best one to present to the class. We decided to present James' as his had the best story line. After we had presented we then decided a whole new idea which was to do a documentary and James started to plan the prezi for this.

Day 2 (14th November)- Our prezi was created for our documentary and we presented it to the class. Good feedback was given back to us for us to improve and we didn't get much criticism. With the feedback we then made a few changes to our story line and then was discussed with Miss Brookes.

Day 3 (17th November)- Our group sat together and decided on all the improvements for our final film pitch. We then starting our sources we will be using in the film so Aaron created a newspaper article which will be used in our film. Sophie, James and Harrison also helped by giving him ideas.

Day 4 (18th November)- Today we began to plan our storyboard, these images show evidence of this.

Day 5 (20th November- Sophie, Aaron, James and Harrison started blogging for preparation for our film pitch.

Day 6 (21th November) - Aaron, James and Harrison have started to prepare the voice over. Sophie has now completed the storyboard and our group are now filming our storyboard.

Day 7 (25th November)- We have all continued to plan and create our storyboard. Timings for each scene have now also been added and we are now ready to start making the storyboard video.

Day 8 (26th November)- Aaron, James and Harrison filmed the storyboard and also did the voice over for it. James was the voice over for the storyboard and Aaron recorded him. Whilst doing this Harrison was designing the wall for his cabin that we are using in our film.

Day 9 (2nd December)- Today we have continued to blog our progress and will soon be preparing our film as most of our scenes have no been filmed the previous weekend. Sophie have also now uploaded the storyboard film and have given evidence of us planning our work.

Day 10 (4th December)- Today Sophie, Harrison, Aaron and James have continued filming our interviewing at school in the drama studio. We have learnt about lighting and camera angles during this process and we are now starting to edit our film as our first draft.

Day 11 (5th December)- I have started to record the storyboard film and finish filming our last scenes of the film opening. Aaron and James have continued to edit our film and Harrison has helped Sophie with the filming of the storyboard.

Day 12 (8th December)- Today we gave feedback to other groups film drafts and also got our feedback back.

Day 13 (9th December)- We used our feed back to improve on our film draft and I continued to edit our film. Aaron, James and Harrison were blogging whilst I was doing this.

Day 14 (10th December)- We have re-filmed our interview as from our feedback we realised our interview wasn't very good and we have added thing to our film so the interview makes more sense.

Day 15 (11th December)- I continued to edit our film whilst James has gathered videos to be added into it. Harrison has carried on producing the newspaper article which James also helped him with and Aaron has been listing our shooting schedule.

Day 16 (12th December)- We presented our film to Miss and got got feedback on it which we used to edit our film in order to improve it. Aaron and Sophie both edited whilst James and Harrison did the newspaper article and re-did the voice over.

Day 17 (15th December)- Today is our last day of making our film and we have made the last improvements to our film. Whilst Sophie edited, Aaron, James and Harrison Blogged.

Shooting Schedule

Location shots

The pictures in this Photobucket are of Josiah's (James) living conditions in the cabin where he was put by his kidnapper. The living conditions were shown by the pictures which show the mess on the floor with food tins, wee on newspaper, old toys that entertained him. There is also scraping on the walls with a tally chart of the amount of weeks he stayed in the shed and drawing pictures of his family in paint hat was left in there.

Filming the interview

Filming the interview with Josiah (James) about his experience being locked up in the shed. He was asked questions that he answered without showing his face because he was still very shaken from being treated disrespectfully and very badly. He did not want to show his face to the camera for people to see.

Storyboard video

This is the storyboard for our idea of the film that we are going to try and produce. This shows the camera shots and the time that we are going to film the shot for.

Peer feedback first draft

The positive feedback we got from our peers was that the acting by Harrison was a good point which he done well. We got feedback on a good setting and idea that can be be used to create a good piece of work.
The bad feedback was that we need more footage with the interview and link with more titles. Also the interview needs to be in a better location with better sound so it is clear to hear. The lighting of the location changes half way through which needs to be adapted so it looks like it runs smoothly. Need to link the shots with better transitions so it looks more like a documentary.
To improve we can add our newspaper artcules into the start and ending to show that it is a documentary.

Location

This is the first photo we have got of our location for 4 of our scenes

Planning day 7

Planning on day 7 with giving everyone 6 roles to do

Individual film pitch

Interview with Richard Morrison

Richard Morrison made over 150 titles including the first Baman film and Gun crazy with some of the advice he has given to the viewer below;

- Make a storyboard by drawing it out and then you have a good enough ide then you can put it into a model. It is key not too over complicate the idea so it doesn't keep changing.

- Once you have created the title you are going to use you can then you will need to wait a day so that you can decide whether it is good and that you like it otherwise you can change your mind and be back to the start with no good idea.

-Once the idea is finalised you do not need to complicate it by adding morre suggestions you just need to adapt them. The team are able to change parts so it all still stays as one task. If the idea doesnt work as much such as the idea he had of the worm that would hang down he had to use tecnology to advance and make the idea work.

High Vs Low Budget

Student Film marking

Vengeance

What I liked about this
  • The opening looks just like a the start of a film as it is a very good pace and the titles come in between scenes which fits really well.
  • The acting from the girl is very good throughout then the boy comes in and does exactly what a boyfriend would do when she needs him to help.
  • The girl getting ready by putting her make-up on and perfume shows the audience that she is trying to impress a boy and then we find out who it is when he walks in without seeing his face at first.
What could be improved
  • The Lionsgate film production does not fit with the genre as there is fire and dark colours in the background of it.
  • could get the male actor to talk more or have more of sa script so we know how the relationship is as the ending seems like she is up to something.
  • Male could put more emotion into acting.
  • Include more camera angles and more editting
Score
48/60
Fits very well with the genre that i am guessing of a Hybrid genre with Romance and drama. Acted well by the female.

Growing Pains

What I liked
  • The mixture of camera angles, with the one on the skateboard being the best one makes it all fit in with the titles.
  • The acting of the area they are videoing is good as it fits in with background, clothing and venue.
  • Like the link with the Pigeons in London.
What could improve
  • The music doesn't really fit with what they are saying and the area that they are in.
  • Do not understand how they link with the boy in their friendship.
  • Could put more enthusiasm into the body gestures/language when standing around and walking as this will show their attitude more.
Score
46/60
Overall the setting of the filming was good for it to fit in with the genre and the characters have done well to use their clothing codes and voice to make it look and sound like the rural area.

Quantum

What I liked
  • The Editing in general is very good and makes it look like a proper film.  The part of it with the mask and people running then disappearing was very good and linked in well with the fight and chase.
  • Music fitted well with the pace of the action and kept the viewer having an eerie feeling of what could happen to the girl.
  • Good setting to have a chase as there is a lot of places that could hide and seems to be no one around in the area.
  • Clothing of the colour black shows that there is something bad going to happen as it is known as the colour of death and scariness.
What could be better
  • Make sure the actors stay in character and have more facial expression about how they are feeling in this.
  • Could have more of a script so the audience know and understand why she is running away from him.
  • Maybe use more colour in the editing to show the mood of the characters.
Score
54/60
Overall this piece of filming has been put together very well and the editing has been done to a high standard.

Representation

1) Will Smith is being represented in a lost, baron world which has had some sort of devistation in the country that they live in. It leaves the audience.
2) It is being represented at the start as there is no one there with car been burnt down and scaffolding everywhere. Grass and weed growing everywhere which means it has not been looked after. Just Will and his Dog.
3) This film opening seems natural as the setting looks like a normal rural town/city centre with lots if shops and a lot of cars parked in the road. A man and his dog just seems true and it like a single man living with his companion which is his dog.
4) A stereotype for a man and his dog are known to be very quiet people and go about their business with no one really realising which happens in this film open as there is no one around them to realise what they are doing and is very quiet.
5)
6) It is in the interest of the main character which is Will Smith and the way he has to live by himself with a deserted town that is empty. The drive in his car at the start of the opening scene gives the viewer an idea of the setting and surroundings that he is living in and shows how baron and quiet it is. Driving his car really quick also shows there is no people there with him as well as he will be putting their safety in danger by speeding.
7)

Prezi Presentation

Narrative- The Prestige

The Prestige-
In this task we had to watch an opening scene of the film 'The Prestige' and we was giving the task to find 4 different narrative codes which could have been symbolic, Binary opposites, typical character types found in films with hero or villain being examples, and finally whether there is any disruption in the film.
The start of the scene seemed to us as the viewer that it involved an innocent magician showing a young girl a magic trick. This soon changed to scenes of electrical equipment  that is known to be used to torment peoples minds sending electrical pulses through them, This is not as innocent as the first scene. From this you can tell the genre of the film that you may first think of it being fantasy or family drama as there are two different age ranges that could link them to being relatives.

Enigma codes in this opening scene can include:
- Who is trying to kill the magician?
- What part does the old man play?
- When was the film set in?
- Will the magician survive?

Symbolic codes:
- The Budgie in the cage
- Old fashioned/old time period Clothing of the audience
- Curtains opening
- Magic wand - Extraordianry
- Suits - important/wealthy people
- Dark - mysterious/eriee
- Electrical - Dangerous
- Curtain lifting - Surprise/suspence

Action codes
- everyone knows that one of a Magicians tricks is plunging into a locked water tank but will he escape this time?
- Electric field which could show the danger that is involved with water that can create a massive electrical shock.

Juno Storyboard

This is the stroyboard for the opening scen of Juno which we needed to do to produce our own editting into a new post below. I manged to produce around a minute.

First Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer

After viewing this trailer you can see the adventure genre as he is trying to find things as part of a quest already. The plot is a group of people who are trying to protect the universe from destruction and ending. While they are trying to do this they come across a lot of challenges that cause them problems to succeeding in their quest. As the film is made by Marvel Studios there is conventionally superheroes and Villains as characters to create the action and adventure to compete and have conflict between each other. Also this film is Sci-Fi genre as it shows a lot of editing and animated characters because a lot of advanced technology has been used to make the characters look different and affective for this genre.  One of the main characters (Starlord) is funny because of his lack in intellengce and common sense about what he does which isn't a conventional characteristic of a main character as this could show that he doesn't have much power for an action genre. the use of explosions, weapons and animated vehicles used shows action genre as it is not realistic.

The Vow Trailer

The plot of this film is about a couple who are deeply in love with each other and got married which is realistic to a stereotypical perfect relationship, but then it all changed for the couple after they were involved and car crash wish caused the wife to lose her memory of everything that has happened between them. This then lead to the husband having to try and get his wife to fall in love with him again as she does not remember who he is and what they had. The audience are able to relate to the actors as it is naturalistic.  The setting of the Events are mixed depending on the feelings involved. Most of the happiness scenes are shown when it is summer because of the choice of clothing being expensive suits and dress with then colours being light, or when they are in sexual scenes in bed. But when the car crash takes place it is winter as it is snowing which suggests it is not a happy place and not safe.
The age range of the male will be in his 30's and is a genuine, good looking, nice person in which will  try his hardest in helping his wife get back to normal. After her accident the wife is unfortunately careful and uncertain about who the people are that are trying to help her get through this actually are to her because of the memory loss she has suffered. The music throughout the happy scenes between them and also when he has belief in fixing things between them is high pitched, upbeat and to a happy tone which shows it is a romance, this shows to the audience that there is hope in falling in love again.

The Guest Trailer

The theme of this trailer is death, sex and action, you can tell this as there is many guns and explosions scenes showing action. The plot of the film is that a man who knows a boy which died, who the comes back to see what the family are up to. His image shows to the audience that he is mysterious and could be dangerous while he hasn't actually just come to check u[p on them, he means a lot more. From the mothers visual image you can tell that she looks like a typical conserned worried mother who accepts to lets this man into her home seeming like she is really nice and friendly. From seeing his body shows the sexual meaning that he is trying to get girls attention with it and he is not being shy of having it on show. The age of the charact is that the male in his 30's and the female in her 50's. The sound of the music used is up beat so that it keeps the audience on edge and tense about what could be happening next creating a big climax.

Oculus Trailer

The theme of the films seems to be a mystery thriller and horror. The main object is the mirror which the whole film is based around. The plot of the film is 2 teenagers looking back through the past for their families sake trying to remember things by finding out the truth about the mirrors power which has caused the deaths of many people. The camera angle reflection view off the mirror for the audience to see in the scenes allows the audience to see her point of view and how scared she is with making the viewer understand if that was them in that situation. The main characters are a girl in her upper teens and a boy of around the same age. The girl is very confident in fulfilling her aim to find out the truth about what happens with this mirror. The boy on the other hand is resistant to be going near this mirror as he is unsure of what could still happen to them.
The background music and sounds that are played create a lot of suspense about what is going to happen. The room that the mirror is kept in is dark and gloomy and is what you associate with ghost settings and haunted rooms so this creates a thought in the viewers head that there is something behind her without her knowing. The quickness of the scenes of the ghost like people creates mystery for both the characters and audience with the costumes being easy to blend in with things in the house so is hard to see.

The Survival

The survival
Our group used a conventional title that is similar to others so we know that it works with the genre. Feedback we got on the title was that enigma was created by thinking why do they have to survive?
Our narrative fits really well with the genre of family genre with the connection in love between the family members to keep them together. However there is rivalry between both families because one of the them will be losing a member due to the death which the disease has caused.
As a group we could of come up with a variety in age groups of the characters which are all similar apart from Jaden. To improve our production of this we need more marketing ideas to make the film well known to the public which will lead to production being high and profits made from selling of the film in cinemas and DVD. This can be done by using advertising such billboards, TV Ads, Radio, newspapers etc.

Inbetweeners 2 trailer

The stage at where Jay is sitting in a chair opposite a woman with a towel round links with the clothing code of red and the colour of the chair which was also red by this colour symbolizes love, sexual and feelings. From this you can tell that Jay is getting sexual feelings from the woman standing in front of him giving him. But on the other hand there is comedy in this scene as Jay is wearing a crown on his head which suggests he isn't being serious about what he is doing and will make people laugh about it.
A second small part of the trailer was a sexual scene when jay has the girl under his covers in his bed and she comes out with no clothes on which all boys believe is lucky. But on the side of the bed in the date of 'Saturday 13th' which people believe to be an unlucky date so this could mean that jay wasn't so lucky after all giving the audience the idea of he is lying.
Throughout the whole trailer there are comments popping up in green and yellow which symbolizes confidence which only Jay and Neil has really. The colour yellow also represents intelligence which Will and Simon have so these colours compare into the friend and the words go together into a phrase that is in the middle of what is actually correct.

Inbetweeners 2 picture

The colour blue that is presented in the sky background suggests that the area around their head is calm and clear because of the colour code of blue. The colour code of brown is a dull lifeless colour which they are walking on. the colour contrast of the text compared to the colour of the sand makes it clear to read. The colour code of what they are wearing could determine how they are feeling as well as Will is wearing a mixture of blue and yellow which resembles cleverness. Simon is wearing blue also as him and Will keep Jay who is wearing red which represents anger, love and fiery which jay as linked too all of them.
The water coming into their feet can mean that the tides are about to turn for them on what they are doing. The text that is on the poster gives the impression they have been causing the trouble such as 'soz oz' with the background of the 4 boys having puzzled, guilty facial expressions. also they are leaving footsteps in the sand to suggest they are trying to leave something behind for people to eventually forget when something else takes over it which will most probably be better. This gives the link between text and image.

From Neil's clothing code you are able to tell that he is the one with the scrambled brain and is a but of a weird one by walking along a beach with the sun out in Australia wearing trousers with a confused face compered to the other three who are wearing shorts and still look hot.

Genre Pictures

This picture has been taken to resemble a young girl trying to get her teddy down from a tree where it is stuck with the father carrying her on his shoulders. The low camera angle makes the girls toy look like it is higher in the tree than it actually is which gives the image of worry that if the father drops the girl it will leave server damage. However the girl is trusting her dad which shows the strong family bond between them both. The weather that the picture is presented in shows that they are having a happy day out which is associated with sunny weather. Background in a school can resemble that the girl is still young and still learning about what things she should be doing. Something to think about next time when taking images on genre would be about seeing facial expressions of how they are feeling and being able to see the teddy clearer cos people could struggle to see with the contract in colours.

The following image shows the action/adventure film genre. You can tell this by the action part of aiming the gun towards the victim who is scared because of the position the attacker is in by making himself look big looking down on to his target which is exaggerated by the tilted camera angle. This shows the power he has over his victim. Props are used in the image to put emphasis on the genre of the event that is happening. Also shows that the victim is not feeling safe in the surroundings and needs a safety helmet to try and save or help in anyway. Something that could be changed could be to be able to see more emotions on the face of the victim to see how she is feeling to have a gun pointed at her and she could also be in a better body position so that viewers can see how she feels from the body language she is showing. Also to show that the scene is action/adventure, the villain could be in more of an moving position to show that he is going to do something in the next scene.
